James Brown and I’m an Engineering Manager here at Liberis. I sit across multiple teams within the engineering org, specifically focussing on our BCA engineering stack & our AI/ML functions.
What’s your name and what do you do at Liberis?
What makes you proud to work here?
I like the fact we get to have genuine day-to-day impact on small businesses that drive the economy in their respective countries. Having previously worked exclusively for mega corporations, Liberis is a refreshing change of pace in that regard, where the actual tangible impact of my work is so much more visible to me.
What are your stand-out memories of working at Liberis so far?
I’ll be cheeky and mention two since they’re related. The day we signed our largest ever partner (eBay US) and the go-live when we started serving their sellers live in production. We had some of the most ambitious engineering delivery deadlines I’ve ever seen in my career - my team absolutely smashed every single deliverable and the launch was a huge success for Liberis & eBay.
Since working here, what ways have you developed – personally and/or professionally?
Hmm good question! Professionally…. I’d say I’ve gotten better at delegating lower-level engineering decisions to my excellent team of engineers. The high calibre of talent we have at Liberis is sometimes shocking (in a good way!) and I love that I get to still treat every day like a school day and learn how to solve technical problems I’ve previously solved myself when I was more junior, but now in a completely new way - it’s honestly quite inspiring!
What makes Liberis different from anywhere else you’ve worked?
Pace. Delivery cadence. Speed. However I could describe it, it’s always an incredibly fast-paced environment within engineering where we’re always pushing to deliver for our merchants with the best possible user experience. We consistently have new & difficult engineering problems to solve, so no day is ever boring, which is great because I hate being bored at work!
What do you look forward to most in Liberis’ future for you and your team?
For my team, I can’t wait to make our AI & ML approach considerably more sophisticated than it currently is. We’re expanding the team in London with multiple new roles in H1 2025 and have very ambitious goals for our team. It’s not currently my area of expertise so it’s a very exciting opportunity for me to learn as much as I can, while working with my amazingly talented team. That’s always been one of my favourite aspects of being a software engineer - you can never stop learning something new in my opinion and the day anyone feels that’s not true, it’s time to find a new job!
